220V residential uses single-phase split-phase (two hot legs, neutral, ground). Voltage drop formula uses factor-of-2 round trip:
V drop = (2 × K × L × I) ÷ cmil
At 240V, a 3% drop allowance = 7.2V — roughly double the 120V headroom, so longer runs are practical.
Example: 50A EV Charger, 75 ft Run, 240V
50A EV charger (continuous load, so 50A × 1.25 = 62.5A wire sizing per NEC 210.19). 75 ft run. Copper. 3% drop = 7.2V max.
- Min cmils = (2 × 12.9 × 75 × 62.5) ÷ 7.2 ≈ 16,797
- 8 AWG = 16,510 cmils → just short
- 6 AWG = 26,240 cmils → passes with 65A ampacity (good for 50A continuous)
