Body Roundness Index Calculator
How it Works
01Measure Height
Stand straight, feet flat — any unit (cm, m, in, ft)
02Measure Waist
At midpoint between last palpable rib and iliac crest
03Compute BRI
BRI = 364.2 − 365.5 × eccentricity (body ellipse shape)
04Read Risk Band
Lean · Healthy · Increased Risk · High Risk
About the Body Roundness Index Calculator
The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a 2013 metric (Thomas et al.) that estimates body fat distribution from waist circumference and height — without weight. BRI ranges from approximately 1 (very lean, lengthy frame) to 16+ (very round). Recent large-cohort studies (JAMA Network Open 2024) found BRI predicts mortality and cardiovascular outcomes better than BMI.
Enter waist and height in any units. The calculator computes BRI using the standard ellipse-perimeter geometry that underlies the metric. You'll get the BRI number, the published mortality-risk band, and the contextual interpretation.
How the Calculator Works
The BRI Formula
BRI = 364.2 − 365.5 × √(1 − (WC ÷ (π × H))²)
Where WC = waist circumference (m) and H = height (m). The formula models the torso as an ellipse and computes its eccentricity — rounder torsos (more visceral fat) yield higher BRI.
Worked Example
Person: 175 cm tall, 88 cm waist:
| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Waist (m) | 0.88 |
| Height (m) | 1.75 |
| Eccentricity term | √(1 − (0.88 ÷ (π·1.75))²) ≈ 0.987 |
| BRI | 364.2 − 365.5 × 0.987 ≈ 3.43 |
| Band | Quintile 3 — moderate |

Final Thoughts
BRI is among the most promising new anthropometric metrics — easy to measure, validated against mortality outcomes in large cohorts, and outperforming BMI in several recent studies. The ToolsACE BRI Calculator gives you the number that's increasingly relevant in modern preventive medicine.

Medical Disclaimer
BRI is a screening metric, not a diagnostic test. Cardiometabolic risk assessment requires clinical context — lipids, glucose, blood pressure, family history. Discuss elevated BRI with a healthcare provider.
