About the Body Roundness Index Calculator

The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a 2013 metric (Thomas et al.) that estimates body fat distribution from waist circumference and height — without weight. BRI ranges from approximately 1 (very lean, lengthy frame) to 16+ (very round). Recent large-cohort studies (JAMA Network Open 2024) found BRI predicts mortality and cardiovascular outcomes better than BMI.

What does the BRI number actually mean?
BRI captures the eccentricity of the torso modeled as an ellipse. Lower BRI = leaner, more cylindrical torso. Higher BRI = rounder, more abdominal-fat-laden torso. Range typically 1–16.
Why is BRI better than BMI?
BMI uses weight and height — it can't distinguish a muscular athlete from a sedentary high-fat individual at the same weight. BRI uses waist and height, capturing fat distribution, which is what cardiometabolic risk depends on.
What's a healthy BRI range?
Per the 2024 JAMA Network Open study (~32k US adults): the lowest mortality was in BRI 2.5–4.5. Above 6.9 was associated with significantly higher all-cause mortality — independent of BMI.
Why doesn't BRI use weight?
Because waist and height alone capture the geometric information needed for the eccentricity calculation. Adding weight adds noise without adding signal — and removing weight makes BRI usable when scales aren't available.
